Don’t give up
I’d just like to say, despite being often jokingly cynical about the world (and sometimes not so much), truly cynical and negative people annoy the heck out of me.
I met someone at a dinner party the other night, and we got to talking about the state of the world: the impending economic recession, the state of education in Australia, the drought, climate change etc. We had pretty similar views about things, and I had a that nice feeling when you meet someone new who isn’t ignorant of the problems we face in this world.
But then she essentially said “we’re all screwed anyway”. And this just completely changed what I was feeling. She went on to say that she couldn’t see a way out of the problems we’re facing and that we may as well enjoy the time we have left.
One thing I like about tumblr is meeting all these wonderful, intelligent, eloquent people who are, for a lack of a better term, ‘socially aware’. But we’re all prone to getting a bit down at times, whether it is the state of the world, or something more personal like the state of the heart. What I want to say to anyone who is reading this:
NEVER GIVE UP!
Never give up on the world, never give up on your friends or family, and most importantly never give up on yourself. We are all human beings, those wonderfully fragile things from which such beauty and creativity blossoms. We all have worth, and if the people or world around you ignores that, then it’s their loss.
And while the problems of the world may seem insurmountable, I firmly believe in humankind’s ability to find a way through it all, just as is echoed by many before me. Please just don’t become like that person I met, and choose to opt out of life.
